Maathai startet The Green Belt Movement i 1977.
Description (EN)
Throughout its history, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has repeatedly shown its support for organized coop- eration between countries. This was reflected when it divided the prize between the UN and the UN Secretary- General in 2001, the centen- nial of the Nobel Peace Prize. Annan received the Peace Prize for revitalizing the UN and placing priority on human rights issues.
Description (EN)
In 1993, the PLO and Israel signed a peace agreement according to which Israel would gradually withdraw from the occupied territories and give the Palestinians self- rule. The following year, PLO leader Arafat, Israeli Prime Minister Rabin and Foreign Minister Peres were awarded the Peace Prize.

ENLIGHTMENT AND EDUCATION TO PROMOTE PEACE

Description (NO)
Description (EN)
A journalist and author, Angell was awarded the Peace Prize for his book, The Great Illusion, which was translated into 25 languages. He maintained that, due to modern warfare, armed conflict was no longer eco- nomically viable and that increased free trade would enhance the dependency between states. Additionally, a higher level of education would reduce the risk of major wars.

PEACE MEDIATOR AND IMPERIALIST

Description (NO)
Description (EN)
President Roosevelt helped to negotiate a peace treaty ending the Russo-Japanese war in 1905. He employed ar- bitration to resolve a conflict with Mexico. While such efforts reflected the tenets of the peace movement, the award of the Peace Prize to him was controversial because he used force to promote US interests in the Pacific and Latin America.

Quote (NO)
Quote (EN)
“Each nation must keep well prepared to defend itself until the establishment of some form of international police power, competent and willing to prevent violence as between nations.”

As a parliamentarian, he believed strongly in nego- tiation and arbitration, not war, as a means of resolving international conflicts.

Quote (NO)
